The Brentwood Police Department is entering a new chapter as Captain Walter O’Grodnick assumes the role of interim chief, following the retirement of Chief Tim Herbert on September 5, 2025.
With over 32 years in law enforcement, including 27 years with the Brentwood Police Department, O’Grodnick's extensive experience positions him well for this leadership role.
His tenure has encompassed diverse assignments such as Patrol Officer, Gang Resource Intelligence Officer, SWAT member, Field Training Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Division Manager.
Most recently, he oversaw the Support Services Division.
O’Grodnick's academic credentials include an Associate Degree in Public Safety Services and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management.
He is also a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute and the Contra Costa Local Government Leadership Academy.
Interim City Manager Darin Gale expressed confidence in O’Grodnick's leadership, stating, "Captain O’Grodnick is a proven leader who has dedicated his career to serving and protecting the Brentwood community."
O’Grodnick himself shared his commitment to the department and the community, saying, "It is an honor to serve as Interim Chief of Police. I look forward to supporting the dedicated men and women of the Brentwood Police Department, working closely with our City leaders, and continuing to build strong partnerships with our community."
