Contra Costa Fire says East County parcels in Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Discovery Bay, Pittsburg, Bethel Island, Byron, and Knightsen face a May 15 deadline for hazardous vegetation cleanup.
As East County grasses dry out and fire conditions shift, the most useful safety reminder for local property owners is not abstract at all: clear the hazards before the season gets away from you. According to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, the 2026 weed abatement deadline for East County areas is May 15, 2026.
That deadline applies to Antioch, Bay Point, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, the Township of Discovery Bay, Knightsen, Marsh Creek, Morgan Territory, Oakley, and Pittsburg. Contra Costa Fire says parcel owners are responsible for eliminating hazardous vegetation and combustible debris, including cured grass, weeds, shrubs, paper, cardboard, plastics, and similar materials that can help exterior fires spread quickly.
The district’s explanation is straightforward: parcels that are not maintained become more vulnerable to exterior fire, and those fires can grow rapidly when vegetation and combustible debris are allowed to accumulate. The requirement applies across residential, commercial, and vacant land, which makes it relevant far beyond open lots or rural edges.
For East County residents, the practical takeaway is simple. If a property has not been cleaned up yet, now is the time to handle it before the May deadline and before hotter, windier conditions make small problems harder to control. Contra Costa Fire also notes that properties must continue meeting weed-abatement standards for the duration of the fire season, which often stretches into late October depending on weather. |
